The key word in this article, and in the entire matter of stock research, is independence. Just because a small firm operates independently from larger investment firms doesn't necessarily mean its analysis is truly independent. A better criterion would be professionalism in the analysis. This characteristic is easy to judge:

1. Are the opinions backed up by facts, and are the facts accurate?

2. Does the analyst show other alternative opinions and the basis for those opinions?

3. What issues, specific to the company as well as relating to the entire sector, are dealt with, and what issues are ignored?

If you find an analyst opinion that lacks this kind of back-up information, then maybe that opinion is unprofessional and worthless.
