It's a very complex issue, of course, but America DID play a central part in the demise of the USSR. America was a far more important presence over there than their country was ever in the US. Every 5 year economic plan used to promise to "catch up and then surpass America". America was a constant reminder that something was rotten in the Communist kingdom.

Eventually, they were forced to decide that if you can't beat them, join them. (How is THIS for an oversimplification of the day?... –g)
