The author of the article created the binary "failed state." He described what he meant. I have no strong disagreement with his description.

Israel is "dealing" with its neighbors. It can't make peace because it can't trust them and there are fundamental conflicts that must be resolved.

The "Soviet Union" imploded. Israel is a western democracy. It will not implode. The "Soviet Union" did not face enemies that wanted to destroy it and replace it with another people's state.

If you look at the prospects of Israel's neighbors, they have been marching downhill rapidly since 9/11 and the prospects are for its continuation. Of course "indefinite" is not guaranteed.
