I had thought that the Japanese almost took over in the 70's. That was when Morgan took the helm, and AMAT was indeed a troubled company. Also, as I recall, Lam came into its own during this period, as it was established in 1981(I believe).

Regarding AMAT, it is worth noting that Cash increased to over $5.2B(I have heard nobody mention this). And Backlog is still very respectable at just under $3B, especially with most of the cancellations probably already in place.
