Hello frankw1900,

Firstly, the blog entry. It is so full of errors that it is not worthwhile to dissect it.

Secondly, the IHT article. That is a discussion of a study by a French research group. I challenge the likelihood that the projection comes true and I also question that - if it does indeed come true - it is actually a "gloomy" scenario.

While I am not satisfied with the state of affairs in Europe my impression is that the role of the EU is exaggerated in US reporting. I doubt that life in Europe is that much more regulated than in the USA. I haven't been to the USA yet so I have no first-hand judgement but what I gather from media the situation in the USA is not that much different. There are areas where there is actually more freedom in Germany (the famous highways) and areas with less freedom (gun control). In daily life the Brussels bureaucracy plays hardly any role. People still primarily identify with their country and not with Europe. If somebody puts up a flag in his garden or at the front of his house it's likely to be the one of his mother country - and it is more often accompanied by the US flag than by the European one. The life of the EU is subsidized by a few percentage points of tax income which are transferred to Brussels and often disappear in some magic circles, like
- paying for surplus cows which produce too much milk which is transformed to milk powder which is fed to cows
- subsidizing tobacco farmers and organizing anti-smoking campaigns

Yes, currently the USA can look back on an economically favorable decade, it has outperformed Europe. But political and economic states rarely develop linearly for a long period. Life will continue to be full of surprises, and I hope I will have a chance to experience first-hand in 2050 what has become of the two continents and the rest of the world.
