German telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom's DTEGn.DE U.S. mobile operator T-Mobile USA [TMOG.UL] won over 900,000 net new subscribers in the first quarter, industry sources told Reuters on Wednesday.

T-Mobile USA, the smallest of six national mobile operators in the USA, had 9.916 million subscribers at the end of 2002 and has consistently won market share over the last year. It is Deutsche Telekom's main driver of core earnings growth.

Deutsche Telekom, Europe's largest telecom carrier, bought loss-making T-Mobile USA, formerly known as VoiceStream Wireless, for $40 billion in cash, stock and assumed debt in 2001.

The smallest of six national mobile operators in the USA, which some analysts expect to be sold, again posted the highest net customer growth in the quarter as it extended its coverage over the United States and continued a marketing drive.

“The new customers are mainly high-value, contract customers,” one source familiar with the numbers said.

Deutsche Telekom declined to comment. Europe’s largest telecoms carrier is due to report first-quarter results on Thursday. T-Mobile USA had 9.916 million subscribers at the end of 2002, and has raised its market share by 1.3 percentage points to 6.6 percent over the last year. Its rivals have so far reported customer growth of between 199,000 and 833,000 subscribers for the first quarter.
