SI segregates a list of approximately 40 stocks and puts them into
the semi-equipment category. Of these stocks, the majority
(approximately 27) are contained within the Standard Industrial
Classification (SIC) 3559 code. This corresponds very closely to
Zacks classification of stocks in various groups. The 3559 category
is Special Industry Machinery.

I "culled" the list of SI stocks to fit within Zack's universe of
37 stocks that are used for ranking purposes. I also removed 2 or
3 others that had "problems". That left a list of 24 stocks out of
the SI list of 40. The resulting list is shown below.

PERCENT
ZACKS CHANGE
RANK LAST P/E
COMPANY VALUE WEEK FY-98
Ontrak 12 -1 61
Lam Research 25 -3 54
Pri Automation 11 2 35
Electroglas 33 7 29
Speed Family 29 2 28
Applied Materials 13 7 27
Brooks Automation 29 -3 26
Gasonics 14 2 25
Mattson Technology 32 3 24
FSI International 26 -2 22
Etec System 15 2 22
Integrated Process Equipment 28 0 22
Veeco Instruments 16 15 21
Novellus Systems 17 5 20
Silicon Valley Group 26 -10 18
Cohu 20 1 17
Asyst Technologies 3 4 17
Kulicke & Soffa Industries 6 1 16
CFM Technologies 3 -12 16
Ultratech Stepper 18 3 16
Watkins Johnson 31 2 15
Semitool 18 3 14
Trikon Technologies 34 -5 10
Tegal 1 -23 9

The irony of this list is Tegal as the last place entry. It is
ranked 1 out of 37 companies by Zacks, yet lost 23 percent in price
last week and carries a FY-98 PE of 9. Maybe it's the best
investment on the list now???
