This is very amusing. You could say this is government's way of saying they do not believe in the free market economics when it comes to citizenship. In other words, if you don't think the government services are not worth your taxes, then you no longer have the ability to opt out of it.

The whole point is to make renouncing of citizenship much harder and more "scary," if you will, so people won't flee the US to avoid taxes.

What a stupid idea. While the guy earned a living in US, he must have been taxed on it. After that what right does the government have to his posessions?
