I think it is much more likely that the name change is part of a move to protect the brand name, internationally. Dell filed USPTO trademark applications for "Dell" which when granted will allow them to use the r in a circle for Registered. Up to now they have been using the common law TM (in print and on their websites) and they must now have seen value or importance in complying with current international trademark laws and treaties.
