John, The left coast and the maritimes have both historically been staunchly socialist. The dispute they have with the Feds is not really ideological, it is just over a few particular issues such as fisheries management.

There is some hope that B.C. and the maritimes are turning away from socialism, as they are finally trying to develop first world (i.e., market) economies. That might increase their antagonism with the Federal Liberals eventually if the Liberals swing left again.
