China says export output up 28.8 percent despite SARS outbreak

Thursday May 15, 3:01 am ET

BEIJING (AP) -- China's export-related industrial output rose 28.8 percent in April, the government said Thursday, indicating that the SARS outbreak hasn't hurt manufacturers.
Overall, industrial output in April was 320 billion yuan (US$39 billion), a 14.9 percent increase over the same month last year, the National Bureau of Statistics said.

The statistics suggested that manufacturing, a key part of China's export-driven economy, has avoided the kind of economic damage from severe acute respiratory syndrome suffered by airlines and other industries hit hard by a SARS-related drop in travel.

Export-related manufacturing in April totaled 207 billion yuan (US$25 billion), a 28.8 percent increase over the same period last year, according to the agency.

Economists say exports could be vulnerable to SARS because foreign orders could drop as buyers put off visits to China. But they say there should be a lag before any SARS-related decline in output.

The World Health Organization and several foreign governments have advised travelers to avoid nonessential trips to SARS-affected areas including Beijing and the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, a center for export manufacturing.
