"The intensity of the Walletjes hits me like a kick in the face. First is the onslaught of aggressive panhandlers. I make my way to the Bulldog for a coffee and there’s a man lying face down in the street. The police are trying unsuccessfully to stir him. I come out after finishing my coffee and now there’s a guy vomiting heavily by the canal. It’s still early afternoon. I walk by Sexyland and three girls come out of the Tromp shouting obscenities in at least three languages at an old tourist couple for taking photos. The girls hobble awkwardly after them in their platform heels. One of the girls has some kind of wooden club (which I think is her kamer key holder) and she’s hitting the 65 year old guy about the head in an ineffective feminine manner. Another girl has his wife in a chokehold from behind. The two tourists are totally in shock. A crowd gathers to watch the bizarre spectacle unfold. You just can’t buy tickets to stuff like this. One girl finally rips the film out of the man’s camera, and another one walks off with the wife’s video camera. I guess she didn’t know how to get the tape out. Thirty minutes later I saw it scattered in pieces among the bricks. Somehow it’s all disturbingly endearing."
