>>it has long been my contention that the NEXT big move in service prices will be down, as the excesses in those industries will be exposed by the coming deficient demand. we've already seen, IMO, the opening salvos in travel-related services (air fares; room rates; rental car prices) with more to come. of course, healthcare prices will never come down but that is not an "inflationary" phenomena, it is a result of stupid counter-productive meddling by far too many bureaucrats.<<

i believe the same, reaper.

what so many of the "anti-deflationists" fail to grasp is that the lack of pricing power and deflationary pressure is a result of

over capacity
falling demand

basically it comes down to the fact that the areas of our economy which are tied to discretionary spending are begging for customers.....who can pick and choose, wait for the best deal at their leisure.

it is quite simply a buyers market

the ceo of continental airlines says "we're only as smart as our dumbest competitor"

meaning as long as there are companies bordering on desperation to just make operating expenses and sustain "life support" cash flow....price increases are just not in the cards.
