Microsemi Offers Lowest Profile Packaging In New Line of UltraMite Schottky Rectifiers

Thursday May 15, 4:30 pm ET

Includes Version Free of Lead Content
-- Environmentally friendly with performance advantages

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 15, 2003-- -- Eliminates lead frames for dramatic size and weight reduction

Microsemi Corp. (Nasdaq:MSCC - News), a leading manufacturer of discrete semiconductors and power management integrated circuits announced today that its Scottsdale, Ariz. operation has introduced a new low-profile surface mount packaging technology called UltraMite(TM) that simplifies handling and mounting, minimizes parasitics, and is available with either conventional termination plating or an environmentally friendly lead-free version.

First devices to use the breakthrough concept are a series of 1 Amp Schottky rectifiers that cut component height in half and weight by one-third. Designated the UMA5817(TM), UMA5818(TM) and UMA5819(TM), these new rectifiers are designed with footprints and electrical specifications that are identical to the conventional 20V, 30V and 40V devices they replace. The lead-free (Pb) versions are designated UMAF5817(TM), UMAF5818(TM) and UMAF5819(TM).

"Packaging innovation to reduce size has always been a strong suit for Microsemi," said James J. Peterson, president and chief executive officer. "That this development also includes a version free of lead is particularly noteworthy, coming at a time when many in the industry are searching for ways to improve the environmental impact of their products."

Microsemi also points to performance advantages that include reduced parasitics and enhanced thermal characteristics provided by an exclusive assembly technique that eliminates lead frames and wire bonds, plus rugged integral terminations in lieu of "J" leads. The new UltraMite rectifiers target applications using conventional SMAJ5817/18/19 (SS12/13/14) devices. They are configured to fit the SMAJ (DO-214AC or DO214BA) footprint.

"These UltraMite Schottkys are the first of many possible power conditioning devices that can benefit from our new packaging," said Mick McKeighan, vice president and general manager of Microsemi's Scottsdale operation. "It's also significant that we are able to provide these many advantages with no cost penalties to our customers," he said.

Unit pricing for all three UltraMite Schottky rectifiers is $0.05 in 10K lot quantities. Complete technical information is available on the Microsemi web site, www.Microsemi.com. Samples, available from stock, can be ordered through this site, or from Microsemi sales representatives and franchised distributors. Production lead time is four to six weeks.
