IT will benefit and improve from this trend, but it will be relatively modest in comparison.

I think you are way off base here or maybe I just misunderstood your point. Software just doesn't spring up on it's own. It has to be thought out, designed and implemented at a reasonable cost or there won't be any customers. New ideas tend to take a lot of time from concept to bullet-proof final products. Products that become seamlessly implemented into the day-to-day business or personal environment. Gaining access to information has improved by leaps and bounds from just a few years ago but it has a very long way to go before the "information" side of the process get's taken for granted.

Information Technology is the banner. Your statement that the Information segment of the IT combination is growing less important is way off base, IMO. How technology accesses and assimilates the information should not be played down. Technology alone allows for speedier and more efficient access to the information but it doesn't (by it's very nature) give us better information or a better "understanding" of the information. This is done by IT - the combination of taking new technology and combining it with software and information. This creates a viable implementation which can be used to improve business(or individual) efficiency and productivity.

Advances in technology are very important. They are the driving engine and should not be down played but I think it's a bit narrow minded to make the statements you did. If and when "technology becomes part of every product", as you stated, the amount or scope of IT that will be required to track, monitor, use, and report on products will be mind boggling.
