‘The Real Deal’ on the Democrat attacks: Tasteless, and also untrue
newsandopinion.com | On the eve of America's war with Iraq, I commented on Democrats in Washington hoping to profit politically from the death of Americans at the hands or terrorists. It's shocking but true.
THE DAY BEFORE President Bush sent out troops to Iraq, Democratic Senators Tom Daschle and John Kerry took swipes at our commander-in-chief, claiming that the president's political and diplomatic failures would lead to deaths at home and abroad. Tom Daschle radically altered his anti-war message, as American troops secured a sweeping victory in Iraq. After all, the liberal Daschle faces his own voters next year in conservative South Dakota.
Senator Bob Graham is also up for re-election in Florida, but has instead decided to take on George Bush for the top political job in Washington and the world. So Graham used Monday's terror attacks as an excuse to hammer President Bush and his war on terror. Graham's main attack on the White House is that al-Qaida would have been busted up by now but for 'Operation Iraqi Freedom.' And he used Americans' deaths overseas to drive home his point. Whether you think the Senator's attack was politics at its worst or not, the bottom line is that Bob Graham was dead wrong.
The State Department reported last month that 2002 had the least reported incidents of terrorism since the U.S. government began gathering such statistics 30 years ago. And while the Pentagon was feverishly planning for the invasion of Iraq, America bagged a number of Al Qaida leaders, including the March arrest of Khalid Shaik Mohammed, the mastermind of the September 11th attacks on America. The Feds have also captured or killed other terror leaders, wiped out al-Qaida's infrastructure, and stopped the launching of hundreds of attacks.
This proved once again that George W. Bush could crack down on al-Qaida, while freeing the people of Iraq.
Hopefully, Democrats in Washington will think twice before using the tragic deaths of Americans to drive home a political point that is not only tasteless, but also untrue. |
