Fred, re: LCD screens for the desktop

I agree that LCDs will make desktop inroads, but suggest you also watch the new plasma display tech as well. The new ones use plasma only for an electron source at each pixel location. These guys are then accelerated to hit phosphors for the light. The picture is brightness and quality are identical to CRTs, but the screen is reasonably thin. As for drive I think they are engineered to take CRT VGA level RGB signals as input. I am sure there is lots of room for improvement with a controller chip more atuned to their native characteristics in the future.

Plasma displays have it all over LCD's for display quality and also manufacturability for large sizes. One of the first makers is Fujitsu with both 42 inch and 21 inch models. You can see thier blurbs at:

Of course today they want BIG bucks for these. Also power consumption is at a toasty 300 watts. It will be an interesting race to see who is first with the best at getting these technologies in line to knock off the venerable CRT. For now I am content to hang the monitor two feet off the back of the desk to get my 21 inch view at a resonable price!
