Upon further examination, I've concluded that the mass graves that we are discussing very likely contain the remains of some of the 10,000 or so Shia rebels that the words of George H. W. Bush incited to engage in a revolt in the aftermath of the Gulf War I in 1991.
Funny how that "further examination" occurred after I requested you document those media sources claiming those corpses were from the Iran-Iraq war.
But 10,000 remains are only a far percentage of the estimated 200,000 people who are suspected to have been eliminated by Saddam's regime.
Or is it that you subscribe to Stalin's belief that "one death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic"??
But I do agree that once called for the open rebellion of the Shiites, we should have provided them all the support they needed. But regional fears from other Arabs states prevented that since they would not permit the US to provide logistical aid to those rebels.
Clinton also deserted the Kurds who were ready to launch a coup in the mid 1990s, going so far as recalling the CIA operative in charge of encouraging such a coup and placing him under federal investigation for allegedly conspiring to assassinate Saddam Hussein.
It's just a very wierd and stupid world full of half-measures and incremental misguided policies which both Bush and Clinton were guilty of.
Do we wonder why "they hate us"? We certainly should not.
And I can't disagree with you there either. Hopefully recent actions will help to alleviate many of the perceptions about the lack of US commitment and resolve.
This is what I find so maddening about you. Presented with the facts that your government is involved in an immoral, unethical and dishonest campaign of disinformation, you obsequiously attempt to show loyalty to a blatantly evil government. Have you no shame? Have you no decency, sir?
Excuse me? If I recall properly, most of those reports came out of the US media, not necessarily as official government statements regarding the Lynch operation.
The official US government policy was not to discuss the operation except in the broadest terms.. But the US media took off with the story and made her a heroine and obviously didn't interview the Iraqi hospital workers until later.
But that doesn't mean that I fault those SpecOps guys for carrying out that operation exactly the way they did. It's their job not to take any chances when they secure a landing zone and engage in what they perceive as a hostage rescue (even if it turns out she wasn't being held hostage).
I cannot for the life of me figure out just what patriotism means to you. You seem to see it as some sort of cover for any swindle that a criminal conspiracy like the Bushista junta cooks up to try to steal the planet's resources and impoverish the working people of the U.S. into the bargain.
Hello?? Since when can we steal something from a thief?? Saddam has been stealing Iraq's resources for his own personal gain for decades. That's a theft that was abetted by BOTH France and Russia. An incredible theft which you don't apparently find any heartburn with Raymond.
A theft which France and Russia manipulated the UNSC to perpetuate, and which you apparently supported.
That makes me wonder about YOUR definition of patriotism...
My view is that this country was founded to advance and defend a certain set of ideas to anyone willing to adher to them, namely the concept of government that is accountable to the governed.
And I believe that even if the majority of oil field work is awarded to US oil companies, the Iraqi people will reap FAR HIGHER benefits than they have over the past 30 years.
All you have to do is look at the incredible poverty being shown in the daily news from Iraq to see that they haven't anywhere to go but up economically speaking.
