>>Infected doc sparks emergency action in Japan TOKYO -

Japan went into 'D-mode' - damage control and disinfection - yesterday amid fears that Sars could have spread to the country.

Officials from Osaka and nearby towns yesterday met for emergency talks on health safety measures after an infected Taiwanese doctor visited the region.

'We are on the brink of a nationwide Sars outbreak, and it is crucial for us to coordinate closely so we can act promptly and properly,' Mr Hirohisa Eguchi, a regional health department chief, told some 40 officials from 12 cities surrounding the western Japanese metropolis of Osaka.
Local officials agreed to use unified virus-testing methods and disease-control measures if the virus has been spread by the doctor, who was confirmed as having Sars on Saturday after returning to Taiwan.

The case has triggered fear of Sars in western Japan. Osaka's Sars telephone hot-line has been flooded with hundreds of calls since the case surfaced.

So far, three people who may have come into contact with the doctor came down with fever but none of them looked to have been infected with the deadly disease.

Officials in Japan are tracking down people who may have come into contact with the doctor during his weeklong visit which covered eight prefectures from May 8 to May 13.
The Japanese authorities have tightened health checks at airports in an attempt to prevent the virus from being brought into the country. -- AP, AFP <<
