Without going into a long lecture, ex-Yugoslavia's location created consequences for many European and NATO countries that were also our interests. The humanitarian imperative was compelling too (recognizing that US foreign policy is so capricious, humanitarian concerns are rarely sufficient on their own to prompt action).

The "wrong side"? You lost me there, I don't see who else we could have backed apart from the Dayton process and then the Kosovars. Certainly not Milosevic, Tudjman or their many thugs.

Fortunately the lack of worthwhile resources in the region means we just want to keep a lid on the place, not swipe some goodies for ourselves.
