My bet is that you hold that view because the right has done a better job recently of connecting their actions to their ideals. Democrats have their ideals, but they have been poorly enunciated as of late, and many times the reasons for actions taken has not been clearly connected to the ideals.

Your point about fringe fits for the right also. Bush ran as a "compassionate conservative".
