Must be getting tired for some reason. The "it" I was referring to isn't Preview, but the PM lag. I meant to say that I don't use Preview so I know the lag exists even without it (and now I see that it's not consistent) but as soon as I come up to speed, I'll look into the PM lag problem.

Edit: There's also the possibility that some observed slowness problems will go away just with the passage of time. I don't know how it works in the Unix world, but in the Windoze world, a large database can be very ill-behaved for a long time after a reboot, until the cache has gotten filled up and straightened out.
