I would think that the Yen expansion would be somewhat subdued inflation in Japan due to the fact that Japan is a net exporter..

I'm having a hard time understanding what you are saying here, maybe you could expand on it somewhat.

Anyway its all cause and effect, I'm on the side that says cause is higher monetary base and effect is higher prices.

In almost all cases I agree with you. I think I included the Japan example in to show that a definition of inflation isn't complete without rising prices, that most wouldn't accept a situation that didn't include rising prices as "inflation" no matter how much the money supply had expanded.
