[It's almost as if someone is... oh never mind its too scary a thought before the facts are in]

Officials say Alberta cow checked for the disease; restaurant stocks hurt.
May 20, 2003: 1:15 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Canadian government will make an announcement Tuesday related to one animal and mad cow disease, a Canadian government official told Reuters in Washington.

The official did not specify whether mad cow disease was diagnosed in the animal.

Reuters cited a U.S. beef industry official in saying the animal was slaughtered and the herd impounded.

Speculation about the case has sent restaurant stocks that specialize in beef sharply lower. Among them areMcDonald's (MCD: down $0.50 to $17.66, Research, Estimates), Wendy's International (WEN: down $0.54 to $30.02, Research, Estimates) and Outback Steakhouse (OSI: down $0.72 to $35.90, Research, Estimates).
