I have worked in a few geographical areas of the US implementing large DB projects and I was amazed at how little knowledge of how to get a system up and running exists outside of SV.

LOL... and if you were a vet, would you conclude that your house is healthier for animals, 'cause your pets are healthy but every time you are called to a job at someone else's house there's a sick animal?

You are a specialist. Your special talents are going to be called to work in areas that require your talent. Not to areas that do not. Judging the planetary capability by the holes into which you happen to be sucked is of course all you have to go on from first hand. But the sampling process is biased to identification of holes. At least you should recognize it.

I had the luxury of working for a large global (tech) company, and to travel all across the globe on a variety of missions. Often our problems were to identify the best location to choose to implement projects. We had offices in SV (of course). But not all tech projects started up in SV. In fact, we chose to relocate as much engineering out of SV as possible as a cost-saving measure. We found local talent in other areas to be cheaper for the same caliber (or higher caliber for the same cost).

So I know of several locations that are superior to SV. If you want one that's just great, try Israel. Those guys work like crazy for next to nothing and they are freakin' brilliant. Or Moscow: I was paying about 1/4 the cost of India, for rocket scientists. Literally. And Bombay is growing quite a talent pool. Don't want to deal with time zones and language barriers and IP leaks? Try Ottawa Canada. Or Windsor Ontario (also in Canada) - both within an easy flight from Boston. Which is also in the US, but isn't much less expensive than SV. Within the US one could go to North Carolina or Texas or Arizona. Or New Jersey.

And so on. These are only the places that I noted had teams equal to or better than we could raise in SV.

SV's tech talent pool is over-rated. Or at least over priced for its rating.

See my prior post however 'cause it's not all about talent. It's about mix.

John.
