11:33AM Tower Semi receives first part of $305M investment (TSEM) by Michael Baron
Tower Semiconductor (TSEM) is off more than 9 percent to $4.99 in midday action. Before the opening bell, the Israeli chip firm said it has received $13.4 million of a total $335 million investment committed to the Fab 2 project by its partners. The company said the funds represent an advance and that it's still in talks with its banks for its 2003 financing arrangements. Tower issued roughly 4.5 million ordinary shares in this initial stage of the investment. The stock was distributed to partners SanDisk (SNDK), Alliance Semiconductor (ALSC), Macronix (MXICY), ICTech Ltd., and The Challenge Fund.


11:16AM Siga gets boost from SARS-related patent news (SIGA) by Michael Baron
Siga Technologies' (SIGA) shares are rallying more than 21 percent to $2.19 after the company said Plexus Vaccine, a company who it agreed to acquire last week, has filed a SARS-related patent in Denmark. Siga said the patent covers a proprietary method of "rapidly identifying and validating antigens, and the results obtained by analyzing the genetic variants of the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) agent.
