Another point. I don't doubt that ROK could have cranked out massive quantities of 68-pin K56 chipsets, but found they would not be able to be firmware updated to support ITU standard, and very wisely decided to forfeit time-to-market versus putting out inferior/obsolete product.

This was discussed on USRX thread at length at the time. Rockwell/Ascend were in no-win situation, and were smart to not flood market with problem (and untested) product and rely on FUD instead. They made the best of a bad situation.
