Had something like that happen to a debit card of mine. The way I found out was that while standing at the head of a long line at AutoZone waiting for my card to be approved, the guy had to call someone and he asked "Are you sure?" then took out a pair of scissors and cut my card in half and kept it.

That bank, rather than notifying customers of the stolen numbers, simply shut off all the accounts with instructions for any merchants to destroy/keep the cards.

The bank tried to explain to me the next day why that was for the best for all involved, and I promptly changed banks.
