Have you ever contracted out any project to any foreign firm yourself? If not, kind of arrogant to discuss the results as though you are some kind of expert with someone who has managed many. And if you have tried, have you succeeded? If not, and others have, that may be more of a statement of your own ability in managing subcontracts than in the inability of foreign firms to deliver. And so on.

I think a lot of people on SI know that I am a director of enterprise software R&D and I've worked with TONS, literally TONS of offshore houses.

But what is your background? Are you trying to tell me you are an enterprise software R&D executive? Have you founded a company and tried to offshore a bunch of R&D? Doesn't seem like it to me John.

I thought pretty much everybody in the software business knew that Oracle offshored 11i and fell off a cliff because of it. Lucky for them the recession hit. A severe error from an R&D perspective. Oracle 11i is the poster child for offshore R&D.

edit- hey I thought of another offshore disaster, I2 vs. manugistics. MANU a much smaller company with no offshore team killed I2 last year. Actually, this was one of the little guy vs. Goliath stories in the industry. I think the answer is, if you are doing maintenance or ongoing support, then go ahead and offshore something. New tech, or release 0, or tech management leadership.... beware.
