But what is your background? Are you trying to tell me you are an enterprise software R&D executive? Have you founded a company and tried to offshore a bunch of R&D? Doesn't seem like it to me John.

Well, there are a lot of things that are what they are, despite how they seem to you Lizzie.

Your seemer's busted.

In this particular case, for example, the answer to all of your questions above is "yes". And indeed I've had literally tens of millions of lines of software successfully delivered from offshore and multi-site developments, over a decade or so. I apologize that I don't know how much this all weighs so I have no basis to compare this to the "TONS" you've managed to work with. But suffice it to say my entire management career has been dealing with multi-site development! Australia, Bombay, Canada, Dallas, England,... almost an entire alphabet of locations (except I couldn't think of a Y or a Z), and in just about every time zone.

Mostly successfully, but not always. And those which didn't work so well (some of which really bombed), when we went through the root-cause and after-action reports it was clear that the failures were due to flaws in methodology and communication. Interface rather than implementation.

My bias was that since other people were doing it successfully then any failure was my responsibility and so set forth finding out what to do better. Instead of sitting back with a bigoted perspective, laying blame on lack of equivalent technical depth "over there".

Things aren't always what they seem.

John
