Symbol Technologies on Tuesday unveiled a ruggedized handheld computer that includes a built-in bar code scanner and voice over wireless LAN support.
The Holtsville, N.Y.-based company said the device, which is designed for mobile workers in industries such as transportation and logistics, public safety, and retail, is the first to merge Wi-Fi voice over IP (VOIP) with imaging and data capture capabilities, enabling workers to speak to each other over 802.11b networks.
The Symbol PDT 8146 Imaging Computer is powered by an Intel Xscale PXA255 processor and runs Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002 Premium Edition. It features a 3.5-inch color display, 64MB of RAM, a CompactFlash card slot, a backlit keyboard and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
The voice over Wi-Fi runs on a separate digital signal processing (DSP) chip, and works even while data applications are running, the company said. The initial voice application includes walkie-talkie and pager functionality in addition to peer-to-peer phone calling.
The tiny bar code scanner -- it measures one-fifth of a cubic inch – can read one- and two-dimensional bar code symbols, Symbol said.
Like other Symbol handhelds, the PDT 8146 is designed to withstand extreme temperatures and repeated drops to concrete.
Symbol also announced Tuesday that German logistics provider Schenker plans to use the new device for tracking and managing delivery data.
