The rust belt has been decaying for a long time.
The sand when turned to silicon and etched into chips provided a basis for an alternative. Information could allow for manufacturing to take place in a distributed fashion. The country's economy may have been trending to people supplying services to those on vacation while waiting for their own vacation to start, but it was flexible and sustainable in a way that increasing production and productivity is not.

After some more rust accumulates the internet will be given another chance. The trouble is it may not be in this country. How do you say "Do you want fries with that?" in Chinese?
