This article gives a better breakout of the black/white situation in the Southern Legislatures than any I have read.

Interesting piece and that's saying something for a John Fund piece. Generally, they are so ideological, I quit reading after the first paragraph or so.

Fund's basic argument is that this racial alignment of Southern politics is the fault of Dems who won't work to get/keep white votes. He has a pro forma sentence or two about the whiteness of the Rep Party, but the frame is to blame the Dems. There is an obvious riposte. But I'll hold it for the moment.

Whomsoever is to blame, it bodes very ill for US politics that political parties become simple reflections of racial/ethic divisions. The Reps keep talking about recruiting racial/ethnic minority members but then campaign with the wink and a nod (and sometime things stronger) so they have not, justifiably so, made much progress. I had expected Bush to be able to do so and we are too early in his national term to know for certain. But, best I can tell, he has made little or no progress.

The next major political science volume on the south should be a fascinating one. In fact, this increases my interest in doing a quick search for the last best such. Might wish to read it.

Do you have any suggestions?
