Never mind that the US military budget is 7x times the total development aid budget of industrialized countries (USD 380 vs. 57 billion).

Jochen.. That might be an valuable argument were Europe, possessing the equivalent GDP of the US, spending $380 Billion in it's development aid budget..

But the fact is that neither the US, nor Europe give away that kind of cash. We want to invest the really big money, not give it away.. Especially when the folks we wind up giving it to are usually a bunch of thieves and thugs, who just divert the money to their own bank accounts.

That's the essential problem with the various foreign aid programs.. They aren't targeted where the greatest amount of economic growth could occur, the small entrepreneur.

As for the genetically modified food argument, I think there's a whole lot more "heat, than light" revolving around the issue. C-Span radio had a call-in program on the topic and some of the BS that was being discussed was just incredible in it's ignorance on the topic.

One lady even called in and tried to claim that we should never modify "god's plants" since we could never improve upon them...

I guess she never heard of hybridization, grafting, and cross-pollenization.
