And yet, apparently Chirac is going to compound the error by confronting Bush once again at the G8 meeting.

I doubt it. I think Chirac will comfort himself in the pomp and circumstance of the meeting, and remain polite. Chirac is now getting the message, if not from his diplomats, then from French tourist operators, cheese makers and vintners. American purchases of French products and American tourism to France has dropped significantly. I just heard some guy from the Heritage Foundation on Fox say that a year ago, a poll of Americans found that 70% had a favorable view of France; recently the poll was run again and found that only 30% still had a favorable view of France.

Though this guy also said that when he was in France recently, he found the French in a time warp, still arguing the pre-war arguments. They have not noticed, apparently, that the coalition won the war in three weeks.
