"I didn't say I would do what I saw as wrong, I said IF I did do it the reason would be for the good that might come of it"

Natural usage and context would lead to a reasonable conclusion that you considered the event possible if not probable. You were clearly pointing out what might excuse or justify such an action on your part. In any case it is only now that your argument has taken on this particular form. If you do not actually contemplate either the probability or the possibility of such an act, and do not hold such a contradictory idea as a value, then I certainly have no point of disagreement with you.

"if I did support the idea the wrong done by the idea would be enormously less and the potential good much more immediate and concrete instead of a utopian vision that I hope will arrive in the future."

Well, that is a point of view, but it is no less rationalizing when done by you than when done by those others whom you mentioned. Indeed, I am sure that they "might" have said that their "good" was something lasting and long-term rather than simply short-term and ephemeral. Doing something "wrong" may, I am sure, be rationalized in as many ways as human imagination may wander; and there will always be one whose vision is concentrated on the near hills, and another whose eyes see mountains and stars.
