MVP-like devices are showing up everywhere..........................

On a recent airline flight, I picked up a copy of ComputerLife Magazine, August 1997. There were THREE separate full-page ads for video capture devices for PCs. Two are boxes that plug into parallel ports, and one is a card. All three will accept video from VHS camcorders or decks. CUBE does an excellent job of antcipating markets, because it is a one-product company -- digital video.

The first device is a parallel port box from Alaris. Tim told us about it this weekend.

The second device is a parallel port box called Video Director, from Pinnacle Systems.

The third device is a plug-in board from a minor company named U.S. Robotics. Too bad a mainstream company doesn't pick this up. Did anyone say video e-mail/conferencing?

The U.S. Robotics device is available as a board with a "video-enhanced" 33.6 fax/modem. You can get with a camera or use your camcorder for the video source. From the web site:
<<<Capture full color NTSC video:
24-bit color at up to 30 frames per second

Video capture sizes supported:
160x120 pixels, 320x240 pixels and 640x480 pixels

PCI BUS Master interface for excellent quality image and high performance:
up to 30 frames per second video clip capture

Built-in RISC engine (Reduced Instruction Set Computing)provides full-rate rectangle clipping for window management

Ultra LockTM technology enables video decoding performance under poor signal conditions

Bring full color video into your PC with your camcorder, VCR or laser disk player

Includes Direct Draw Drivers

* Other end of connection must also be camera-equipped to see called party.>>>

Maybe some can check out these websites and dig out more details. Why not e-mail them and ask if they use MPEG1?
