but the point IS that new boards were required regardless of the pin configurations. Consequently putting 84-pin sockets on new circuit boards or cards was not out of the question and easily accomodated. You're suggesting that in arriving at a K56 product seemed to Ascend that only putting the new chips onto the old cards was required but suddenly - HORRORS! - it was discovered that the new chips had 20% more pins!

What is your source for info that Ascend wanted ROK to "beef up" existing hardware (you mean chips?) to make K56 go?

My take on what occurred late last year was that Ascend had a wholly different notion and their "first to market" was based on a notion that couldn't be realized - but pins weren't the issue. If you have something that was announced by either ROK or ASND that pinpoints it to pins (pun intended) then by all means put it up here or email it to me and I'll shut up (only momentarily - don't get your hopes up, Paul). ;-}
