John,

Throwing out Vesper to my Ricochet is fair but silly. I can point to many CDMA operators making real money while I doubt you can point to a single Wi-Fi network operator making any money. Why is that important? Well, if the operators cannot make money then eventually the equipment providers will have no-one to sell to.

Again, I am not arguing that Wi-Fi is not good and compelling technology, but I see it in the same light as many other technologies that promised so much but in the end turned out to be fairly ordinary.

I am a metrics guy. Show me the numbers and I will start to believe, but everything in your post sounds more anecdotal then empirical. "The technology is a winner. It just hasn't won yet" What does that mean?
