Wow, quite a year so far

2003 Biotech contest--McFarland $163,199
Popular biotechs $161,606
...and each up 2-3 percent today.

I sold most of the rest of my biotechs
after my portfolio went above 50% a
week ago, and sold my wife's portfolio off
after it nearly doubled off the low of last
fall (although it is still down 60% from the
early 2000 high). My own real world motley
group of mostly biotechs was up 30% from
the low of last fall when I sold most off.
And that was no small feat--that account
was half cash as it was.

About a week ago a columnist named Nicholas Kristof
did a piece about an Australian gynecolgist. This
is a serving suggestion for anybody who wants to
get the hell out of this market now, and doesn't
know what to spend your money on, heh! Warning,
the story will break your heart.

You can link to the story at the New York Times
This girl fought off the hyenas and crawled for a day to reach an American missionary, who eventually brought her to the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital that Dr. Hamlin heads. Dr. Hamlin was able to repair her fistula, and now Ms. Mohammed is a confident young nurse's aide at the hospital here.

Of course I am looking forward to the winner in December
and sending my pledge in. But here is something extra
for all of us feeling flush at the moment.
