I think I have been quite clear that I respect AMAT right up there with the ORIGINAL HP built by Bill and Dave for honesty but recent mistakes at each have hurt their image and could destroy decades of goodwill.

Really? I admire amat the company for their mkt dominance in an impenitrable space that they pretty much invented. But as far as amat's personnel policies and the way they treat people, imo AMAT is no HP. AMAT only grants stock options to management, for one thing- the mgmt layer at amat is something of a gravy train. And they burn out these young foreign-born engineers they hire. AMAT is something of an abuser of the H1-B policy, imo. A very top-down management style compared to other valley companies and that is usually not the best policy long term. Not trying to say the company is all bad but in the staffing areas they have some work to do. Maybe, if they had more of a cisco-type culture they could have thwarted the competitive threat from nvls? Just a thought.
