Like Cohen, Uri Avnery, favored an accommodation with the FLN. The thrust of his argument about Israel's Algerian policy had been that Prime Minister Ben-Gurion in particular supported the Organisation Armee Secrete (OAS), an organization made up of desperate European civilians intent on saving French Algeria and of bitter army officers bent on overthrowing de Gaulle at any price, with Algeria as a means rather than an end. The OAS was never a united group, either in fundamental tendency or in leadership. It had no coherent ideology beyond a vague, proto-fascist republicanism.
Presenting no solid evidence to corroborate his accusation, Avnery related that Ben-Gurion backed the faction within the OAS that encouraged the partition of Algeria into Muslim and European areas, in lieu of keeping Algeria under complete colonial domination.

Several days later, Serge Bromberger, a French journalist with strong connections at the Quai d'Orsay, wrote in Le Figaro that, lurking in the shadow of the solidarity between many Algerian Jews and the OAS, was an OAS-Israeli conspiracy. Israel trained a special fighting unit in Oranie [the Jewish branch of OAS in Oran was headed by Yaya Benichou - ref: Georges Fleury in Histoire secrete de l'OAS, Grasset 2002] that engaged in anti-Muslim terror, and sided with its extremist leaders, notably General Raoul Salan and Jean-Jacques Susini [*]. Despite the emphatic denials by the Israeli embassy in Paris to the allegation, the article helped cast more doubt on future Israeli-Algerian understandings.

Avnery thought otherwise. Israel had betrayed the Algerians by backing the OAS and rightist French generals who had planned to overthrow de Gaulle for wanting to give Algeria away. Ben Bella had every right to be angry with Israel, given her role in training an OAS-affiliated Jewish paramilitary organization in Oranie.
