Well then, since you must be an RF engineer to proclaim all problems solved, all you have to show me is an OFDM/VoIP handset that outperforms a 1X phone or GSM phone on battery life, handset cost, and coverage. Just those three. We have already discussed consumer apathy for wireless data and Intel's attempts at repair through media advertisements. Unfortunately, ETSI and 3GPP members do not have a history of developing a shiny-new GSM sequel with flameouts like UMTS, WAP, GPRS, and EDGE. In the end, what you and Rob need is a paradigm shift. Unfortunately, it is going to have to come from consumer demand. Not a blizzard of patches and PRs from IEEE and 3GPP.
