3. The degree to which the Reps are increasingly dependent on a hard right electoral base

I referred to "essentially Sharptonish" thinking as one of the reasons for the downfall of the Dems. Seems like you buy into that kind of justification. I pray that you are representative of that kind of Devil-under-my bed mode of thinking because it is not only unpragmatic but thoroughly outdated.

It's wrong, wrong, wrong, and the Dems had better recognize it before they self-immolate again.

The Dems and the GOP both recognize that they have core constitutencies on which they can rely. The fight is over the middle bunch of voters like my wife who votes Dem one year and GOP the next. It is this group that the Dems have for the moment lost due to Clinton's shenanigans, his opposition to the military, perceived Dem weakness in foreign policy, the perception that Dems are dangerous pacifists in times of danger as recently evidenced by Daeschle's whining over Iraq, and a host of other critically important security-related issues.

If the Demos are to once again become pre-eminent, they need to fashion a strong security and pro-military stance during this time of danger. It's the only way in which to appeal to the small sliver of true centrists who make and break national elections. The GOP, unfortunately, is already there. The Dems' leadership will never credibly go that route.

Can you see Ted Kennedy in uniform? Remember that Greek guy in a tank? Compare those images to those of Bush landing on a carrier or that of an American tank crew bringing down Saddam's statue.

Lost before the race began.

The foreign policy and security issues will be pre-eminent for years. So will GOP domination of national politics.

The NYT sort of gets it, but not completely. Hope this isn't plagiarized...
