I follow a hard and fast rule. The second I hear about accounting improprities in a company, I dump the stock as quickly as I can. My reasoning is that it they suggest a more pervasive problem.

This rule helped me take very nice profits out of Lucent a few years ago. It was one of my favorites at the time. Followed my rule and got out at pretty much the top, even though it was the financial equivalent of shooting the family dog.
