I ran two BBSes back in "the day", both boards running on exactly the same equipment and making calls to tons of "doors" as we called them, via what my best friend and I still call "The BAT file from Hell".

What I love about Unix already is that though I was able to accomplish a lot with BAT files, Unix's internal commands are MUCH more complete and robust.

The BAT file we used was full of environment variables. Each BBS node ran on its own computer, booted off a floppy with a minimal BAT file that set its own environment variables, then they all ran from the same BAT file on the network. Was really pretty cool.
