You just nailed the major problem. Only you don't realize you have. "Rote" learning? The basics of the "3Rs" are skills, John, not education. One of the best ways to learn skills is by "Rote." The present Generation of Elementary Teachers has been taught that this is wrong. So they are not brainwashing, (yes, I am using it on purpose) these skills into the little monsters.

That is why I am delighted that one thing the schools are doing to meet the test requirements is concentrating on the Basics.
