As for your argument that the middle group of voters were lost because of Clinton and new perceptions of their weakness on national security issues, it's a bit of an overgeneralization.

How else do you explain the midterm ('02) election results? I'd be very interested in hearing what you have to say.

Did you read the NYT Magazine's article on campus conservatives? There are lots of clues in that article as to why the Dems are faring so badly. Conservative kids are taking up the role of rebels against all the silly PC multi-culti stuff they are force fed on campus. As a result, they have become a lot more appealing figures and leaders. They are the harbinger of the future. No more chinos and blazers, Clark Kent haircuts, etc. It's cool to be conservative on college campuses now.

These kids are organized, smart, dedicated, and a lot more socially tolerant than you would ever imagine. I love them. They are going to be the backbone of the GOP for generations to come. Rebels with a cause.

Couple this nascent trend with Dem weakness on national security and the future is writ large--the Dems are going to be in serious trouble.

They need to project a more libertrian attitude, promote lesss government instead of more, and show some backbone on national security issues before the political tides will turn.

Recall that the GOP was in deep trouble in the '70s--there is hope for you.
