Cool essay on Emerson - he certainly is more complex than I realized - but if you think Cheney, Rummy and Dubya are not "frank and direct" you probably get your news filtered through the NY Times. Take the trouble to watch them uncensored on, say C-Span, and you'll see. You may not like what they have to say - I assume you won't - but frank and direct is what they are. They aren't always right, and perhaps they dissemble at times, but they aren't sly, like some others I could mention but won't because it ticks off the moderator. There is a brand of rough, direct American speech that I adore, but is rejected by many as lacking "nuance." Cheney, Rummy, and Dubya wouldn't know a "nuance" if it bit them on the ass.
