So far donor countries have committed just $300m to road-building in all Afghanistan, by coincidence exactly the same amount of money as is being spent on reconstructing the US embassy in Kabul. Much of that $300m is being spent on building an 80km stab of road south from Kabul towards Kandahar. The contractor is Bechtel, the US construction giant whose Kabul representative says that 1km of road costs almost $400,000 to build in Afghanistan's hostile environment. That means that more than $1bn is required just to recreate the 3,600km main ring road linking the country's main cities: Mazar, Herat and Kabul. That money is not forthcoming, let alone the cash needed to pave over the numerous smaller roads.

Three hundred million dollars to reconstruct the Amer. embassy? That is a perverse joke......as a real estate accountant, you must know that. Instead of directing your energy into putting down liberals and feeling smug, you should be questioning your gov't.

Three hundred million dollars would build a quality, sizable office bldg. in the US; it should build something unbelievable in Afghanistan with its cheaper construction costs.

Worse........Afghanistan is floundering. The article speaks the truth. The Taliban gain in strength and Karzai is in trouble. I now wonder if al Qaeda was ever hurt by our actions.

Your president is lying to us; not over minor sexual issues but over WMD and terrorist organizations and over issues involving money and contracts. In the meantime, his gov't spends like the mint is producing dinero 24/7 and there are no worries.

Rome fiddles and blames the liberals for its problems when Caesar is the one fukking up.
